About This Program
The COT is incredibly excited to stage an opera for the first time, and what better than “the opera that broke opera!” By far his most famous composition, Chirstoph Willibald Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice transformed the operatic genre and set the course for the great operatic composers that were to follow.
In this eternal love story, Orpheus despairs over the sudden loss of his new bride Eurydice. Pitying the ailing bard, Amore (Venus) tells him that he can recover his lost love by descending into the underworld, and bring her back on one condition: he must walk in front of her and not look back until they have reached the world of the living.
Young Concert Artist winner Megan Moore headlines a cast featuring sopranos Molly Quinn and Susannah Stewart, and the Carolina Chorus led by Susan Klebanow. The orchestra will be led by Artistic Director Lorenzo Muti, with stage direction by Niccoló Muti. The opera will be sung in Italian, with English supertitles.
