School Outreach

For our 2023-2024, with the introduction of the Durham Fellows String Quartet, the COT hopes to establish residencies in 8 pilot schools who will host us for several classroom visits, an assembly visit, and join us for a full orchestra performance at the end of the year.

On May 19, 2023, The COT invites elementary school music teachers in Durham Public Schools and Orange County Schools to our Education Wine-down event, a focus group for teachers and stakeholders. We will discuss our experiences with guest performers at the elementary level and brainstorm ways to make the most of our program moving forward. If you’re interested in investing in the education department, please register for this event below!

For the 2022-2023 school year, we’ve had the opportunity to establish residency programs with Riverside High School and Durham School of the Arts. This year’s quartet-in-residence, The Verona Quartet, worked with each student orchestra for 9 class periods, culminating in a joint performance at the school.

Also this year, The COT began cultivating relationships with local elementary schools. The Verona Quartet partnered with Lyons Farm, Southwest, E. K. Powe, Parkwood, Fayetteville, Pathways, Club Boulevard Elementary, and Little River K-8 School. They performed for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in classroom settings as well as interactive assemblies.
